Cover Controversy: Why We Love to Hate Everything

mindy12f-1-webHoly shit, you guys. First of all, calm the F down. Second of all, calm the F down.

So, there’s been all this backlash at Elle for their February 2014 cover(s), which featured Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, Zooey Deschanel and Allison Williams. The problem? Well, there is no problem, so people just made one up.

People have been freaking out because, while Amy, Zooey and Allison were pictured from head to toe (or at least knees), Elle only showed Mindy from the boobs up. So of course, everyone had to get mad that her full body wasn’t being shown like everyone else. For example, Julia Sonenshein at thegloss.com wrote:

“Here she is on a cover with three women who do fit into the ‘model-skinny’ category, and Elle cropped her body out almost completely. While Poehler, Williams, and Deschanel all displayed about 75% of their whole bodies, Kaling didn’t even get a whole torso…I don’t entirely understand the intention behind releasing four covers that act as a set, but painting one subject specifically as the odd-man-out.”

Here’s the intention: There isn’t one. Elle simply saw this as a beautiful shot and decided to use it on the cover.

But OK, OK, you’re still pissed. Let’s talk about why you are being incredibly offensive.

First, let’s switch these roles around a bit. Let’s say that it was Allison Williams who was only shown from the chest up. Would there be a controversy? No, because who is going to say, “Why didn’t you show the skinny girl’s entire body? Is she too skinny for you?”

To be clear, what you’re basically saying is, “Why didn’t you show the fat girl like you do everyone else?”

Oh, you don’t see why that’s rude? Besides the fact that you’re singling someone out and calling them fat? Well, she’s not fat. She’s gorgeous. So gorgeous, in fact, that Elle decided they needed to zoom in on that beauty so we can get the full, knock-out effect.

And before you get all up in my face with comments, you should know that Mindy agrees:

Speaking on Letterman last week, she said, “The implication was, ‘What, Elle, you can’t put her big, fat body on the magazine? Why? Cause she’s just fat and gruesome? Why can’t we look at her beautiful fat body?'”

Seriously.

4 Hot Babes You’ll Say “Yeah, Right” to When They Tell You They’re Plus-Size Models

Real talk, guys: I had trouble not bursting into laughter when I wrote “Plus-Size” into this headline. These girls are gorgeous models, and they happen to not be a size 00. Technically, they’re plus-size models—but after looking at these ladies, what does that even mean ? From what I gather, it means anyone who doesn’t fit into designer sample sizes, and I’m going to guess that pretty much all of us. (Also, side note: A former Cosmopolitan editor recently wrote an exposé on how, in more recent years, women’s magazines have put more effort into photoshopping models to look bigger (“fuller” might be a better word). It’s worth a read.)

4. Leah Kelley

Leah burst onto the scene recently modeling Robin Lawley’s (see below) swimsuit line, and people went nuts—over an instagram of the shoot. The swimwear wasn’t even out yet! You can see why she is such a hit.

3. Toccara Jones

Though she finished in seventh place on season three of America’s Next Top Model, Ms. Jones has gone on to a fabulous modeling career and even has her own workout DVD, Toccara’s Fabulous Workout.

2. Robyn Lawley

So. Much. Gorgeous. Robyn has worked with massively talented photographers including Lee Broomfield and Steven Meisel and is the first plus-size (sorry, “plus-size,” because, be serious. She’s skinny if she’s anything.) model to appear in a campaign for Ralph Lauren.

1. Crystal Renn

My all time favorite model, Crystal Renn, is pretty much perfection from every angle. She caught flak a few years ago for losing weight, but her rep assured us she was just exercising and hiking more, and not starving herself.

Training Week #13: 16 Miles

Whew! Sixteen miles. So that’s done. This was the training run that really made everything click—that this marathon is happening and running it is really hard. Twelve miles was hard. Fourteen miles was hard. But this week, 16 miles was painful. Especially once we hit the last three miles, when I felt like I was crawling through an ocean of molasses just trying to get back to the parking lot. Weirdly, this has made me even more excited for our 18 mile run coming up in two weeks.

The best thing we did was switch up the scenery and run at the beach. We started just south of the Santa Monica Pier and ran four miles north, just a little past Temescal Canyon Road. It was a beautiful day at the beach. We are so lucky to live here!

A Happy Start to the New Year: Vegan Whole Wheat Waffles

Happy 2014, everyone! Instead of black-eyed peas, we started the new year with whole wheat waffles, a recipe from “Vegan Cooking for Carnivores” by Roberto Martin. Don’t worry, you don’t even have to ask—they are sooo freaking good. Highly recommend. I also recommend buying the cookbook if you’re curious about a vegan diet—Roberto is excellent at making a plant-based diet palatable to those who prefer the meatier side of food.

New Year, New Wardrobe

Give yourselves a pat on the back guys, because, congrats—we made it through the holidays and to the new year with our sanity firmly in tact (eh, sure).

I love to start the new year fresh. After setting a bunch of goals for 2014, my favorite way to stay motivated is to clean out the old clothes I don’t wear anymore and re-build with a wardrobe that inspires a new routine. If you’re rebooting your wardrobe too, you’ll need these staples (buying info here):

1. Accessories

Stand out with a chunky necklace—this year, the chunkier (and wilder), the better.

2. A Jacket, a Sweater, a Blouse

Each of these make for a versatile wardrobe, especially when you rotate them with…

3. Jeans, Jeans and Jeans

Worry about pants later—right now, you need to get comfy in denim: black jeans, boyfriend jeans and dress-up jeans (for a night on the town that doesn’t require a dress).

4. Boots!

While it’s still cold out, enjoy the best part of cold weather and strap on a pair of heeled boots. Or, to stay a bit more comfy, try quilted riding boots.

5. Last But Not Least: The Bag

Do I really need to give you a reason to buy a new purse?

7 Worst Fashion Mistakes of 2013

There were a lot of fashion highlights in 2013 (Jennifer Lawrence in Dior, Kerry Washington in anything…) and we’ve already done a roundup of our top posts of 2013, but let’s be honest: It’s way more fun to look back on the worst fashion mistakes made this year. So, in the spirit of the new year and hopefully in the spirit of not making the same mistakes again (though, give it 10 years. If the 90s made a comeback (eesh), then so will peplum), here are the seven worst fashion mishaps of the year.

7. Rihanna for River Island

The pop singer debuted her second collection for River Island this year, and it was hideous. She may be quite beautiful, but her “designs” were more of the “Just put some leather or camo on it and call it a day” kind of effort.

6. Denim…EVERYWHERE

Sleeveless denim jackets to denim headbands to denim purses—all places where denim should never, ever go. Or visit again.

5. Flatforms

They’re platforms…that are flat. Say that out loud and decide if it sounds as dumb as it looks.

4. Peplum

Peplum, you tricky minx. I started 2013 absolutely loving peplum, and my closet shows it. I have a peplum dress and at least two peplum tops. The problem is that everytime I put them on, suddenly I’ve gained 10 pounds and lost my sanity. Seriously, it throws me for a loop at how bad peplum looks and how it manages to cut you off in the worst spot possible. In conclusion, peplum on models and super skinny celebs=yes. Peplum on everyone else=no.

3. Sheer Panels

Blurg, I’m bored just looking at this. Next.

2. “Designer” T-Shirts

Oh, you changed Hermés to Homiés? Céline to Féline? And then you charged a buttload for it on a t-shirt? How inspired.

1. Lady Gaga

I go back and forth about all this Lady Gaga business. On the one hand, she’s extremely talented. And she certainly isn’t afraid to take fashion risks. But at a certain point, Lady G is just dressing weird for the sake of dressing weird. It’s no longer fresh and cool; it’s reaching. You know what Gaga could do to be shocking? Sweatpants and a ponytail. And Birkenstocks. (Oh, holy goodness, I’d flippin’ love to see Gaga in some hip 90s sandals.)

Because, eh. Enough already. I think her whole out-there image thing was less grating when she was making decent music. But Artpop? Techno throwaway junk. Which is a shame, because she can play the piano like a monster. Can we rally for a Gaga acoustic show? Sweatpants mandatory.

Ring in the New Year with Healthy Habits

I’m a big believer in New Year’s resolutions. Most people wait until January 1 to start on their new goals, but I like to jump in head first—two weeks early (though, I realize right now we’re less than a week from NYE). I’ve been doing this for a few years now, and it’s always much more effective when you can step into the new year with a strong start on your resolutions.

It’s easier to exercise daily/lose 10 pounds/eat healthier/volunteer more if you’ve not only been doing so for two weeks, but you managed to fit those things in around the holidays. Plus, when you’ve planned ahead and started your resolutions early, you won’t wake up on New Year’s Day hungover and thinking, “I’ll just start eating healthy tomorrow…”—that’s the end of the beginning.

One more tip? Tell bunches of people your resolutions so you’ll feel accountable to your words. (Mine are below! And if your resolutions include charity work, start now! Find details on donating to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital here!)

So what are your resolutions? Do you guys have any special tips on sticking to those goals for 2014?

Marathon Training vs. a Nasty Cold

Marathon training is going so well, to the point where I look forward to 12-mile runs on a Saturday morning. And right smack dab in the middle of all that goodness—a cold hits. Like, I woke up this morning and it was all stuffy nose, sore throat and cough, cough, cough. So now I’m trying to speed heal in order to be ready for our 14-mile training run this weekend. This weekend! So soon!

My go-to cold remedy is always a vegan diet, and the lack of dairy contributes to a lack of mucus, so, hopefully I’ll be feeling better tomorrow morning. We’ll see. (I’m not much for over-the-counter cold meds, they  make me spacey and a little nauseated.) For now, it’s lots of healthy foods and maybe—just maybe—some super helpful advice from my favorite bloggers? Any suggestions for feeling better soon are welcome!

Side note: Because we’re in Los Angeles, we have the chance to try Amazon Fresh grocery delivery. We had bunches of fresh produce delivered today at Trader Joe’s prices. Worth. Every (though not many). Penny.

Great Gifting: S’Adonner Candles

Most people light candles during a bath or before bed at night, but I like to wake up to a fresh, invigorating scent that instantly perks up my morning. Since I don’t drink coffee (for now…we’ll see what happens. I’m trying!), the next best thing are these scented candles by S’Adonner.

Bamboo for Breakfast has notes of mandarin, grapefruit, lemon, jasmine and eucalyptus. They have three other scents (Brise de Mer, Middle Eastern Delight and Vintage) that I highly recommend, and at $27, they make the perfect gift for a party hostess, your bestie, your sister—pretty much anyone!
