I’m Hooked: The Husband’s Secret is Great (and Not at All as Soap-Opera-ish as the Title) from Page 1

the_husbands_secret1-e1391558876465I started in on “The Husband’s Secret” by Liane Moriarty, and no, it’s not soap opera fan fic (though…note to future self: Be a millionaire by writing soap opera fan fic)—it’s about a woman who comes across a letter from her dead husband who is not-so-dead. They each wrote letters to each other in the event of either’s death, and she happened to find his before he kicked the bucket. Turns out, he’s been harboring a fairly nasty secret, and now she has to decide whether or not to tell on him. Oh, marriage, you crafty minx.

Anyway, that’s not what got me hooked. It’s the paragraph Ms. Moriarty included before the book even begins:

“Poor Pandora. Zeus sends her off to marry Epimetheus, a not especially bright man she’s never even met, along with a mysterious covered jar. Nobody tells Pandora a word about the jar. Nobody tells her not to open the jar. What else has she got to do? How was she to know that all those dreadful ills would go whooshing out to plague mankind forevermore, and that the only thing left in the jar would be hope? Why wasn’t there a warning label? And then everyone’s like, Oh, Pandora. Where’s your willpower? You were told not to open that box, you snoopy girl, you typical woman with your insatiable curiosity; now look what you’ve gone and done. When for one thing it was a jar, not a box, and for another—how many times does she have to say it?—nobody said a word about not opening it.”

Training Week #18: 10 Miles

Holy countdown, Batman. We are a mere (less than) four weeks away from the marathon! I could not be more psyched. Last Saturday, we had a nice 10-mile recovery run. We started so early that even the streetlights were complaining about the hour. But the (second biggest) event is this coming weekend, when we do our 22-mile training run. I’m equally excited for this run as well. And then that’s it! Kind of—we still have two recovery runs after that, an 11-mile and a 5-mile—but this will be the end of our long training runs. Then it’s marathon time.

Black Bean and Butternut Squash Burritos

burrito stuffs 2I know that pretty much every recipe I feature here is, just, my new favorite thing and the best thing you’re about to ever eat. And to be fair, I never really exaggerate—I have found some amazing recipes! But this one is my new favorite, seriously, I could eat it for days. (Haha, I did eat it for days.)

Besides how yummy it is, I also love that it can be done with regular cheese, Daiya cheese for a vegan recipe or with no cheese at all because it’s Just. That. Good.

I didn’t do step-by-step photos, but you can find some great ones at Oh She Glows, where I originally found the recipe. Guys, I just can’t recommend this enough. Seriously, I’m texting my best friend right now that it’s also good just as a side dish. I’ve included the recipe as I originally found it, but when I cooked it, I changed it up a bit by doing 1 cup of wild rice (instead of a half cup of short-grain brown rice). It gets pretty rice heavy, but it’s worth it. I stirred in some cheddar cheese and then served it with avocado.

Yield: 4 burritos or 3.5 cups of filling

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium butternut squash, peeled, cubed, & roasted
  • 1/2 cup uncooked short grain brown rice (yields: 1.5 cups cooked)
  • 1-2 tsp olive oil
  • 1 cup chopped sweet onion
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 red pepper, chopped
  • 1 tsp kosher salt, or to taste
  • 2 tsp ground cumin, or to taste
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper, or to taste
  • One 15-oz can black beans (about 1.5-2 cups cooked), drained and rinsed
  • 3/4 cup Daiya cheese (or cheddar cheese)
  • 4 tortilla wraps (large or x-large)
  • Toppings of choice: (avocado, salsa, vegan sour cream, spinach/lettuce, cilantro, etc)

Step 1: Preheat oven to 425F and line a large glass dish with tinfoil. Drizzle olive oil on squash and give a shake of salt and pepper. Coat with hands. Roast chopped butternut squash for 45 mins. or until tender.

Step 2: Cook brown rice (for directions, see here)

Step 3: In a large skillet over medium-low heat, add oil, onion, and minced garlic. Sautee for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Now add in salt and seasonings and stir well.

Step 4: Add chopped red pepper, black beans, and cooked rice and sauté for another 10 mins. on low.

Step 5: When b’nut squash is tender remove from oven and cool slightly. Add 1.5 cups of the cooked butternut squash to the skillet and stir well. You can mash the squash with a fork if some pieces are too large. Add Daiya cheese and heat another couple minutes.

Step 6: Add bean filling to tortilla along with desired toppings. Wrap and serve. Leftover filling can be reheated the next day for lunch in a wrap or as a salad topper.

L.A. is Now One of the World’s Fashion Capitals; Plus, Big Changes for New York Fashion Week

Fashion_District,_Los_Angeles,_CAFashion junkies across Los Angeles are all thinking, “In your face, Milan!” right about now. Global Language Monitor released their yearly report on the fashion capitals of the world, and Los Angeles came in FOURTH! I know, I know, as much as we love L.A. and all of its designers—we were shocked too. As was GLM, which noted in the article, “Los Angeles! Yes, L.A.,” after we moved up five spots from 2012.

The top three cities were New York (stealing the spotlight from last year’s capital, London), Paris and London, respectively. See the rest of the list here. The rest of the top 10 included Barcelona, Rome, Berlin, Sydney, Antwerp and Shanghai.

New York’s top ranking bodes well for the upcoming Mercedes-Benz Fall/Winter 2014 Fashion Week, taking place February 6-13. IMG Fashion, which runs NYC’s fashion week, reported to the Wall Street Journal that a number of changes were in the cards for fashion week, which had become “too cluttered with people whose connections to fashion were tenuous at best.”

“It was becoming a zoo,” said Catherine Bennett, senior vice president and managing director at IMG Fashion Events and Properties, to the WSJ. “What used to be a platform for established designers to debut their collections to select media and buyers has developed into a cluttered, often cost-prohibitive and exhausting period for our industry to effectively do business.”

Those changes include new, less expensive venues. And, said the WSJ, “The redesigned venues aim to better control and reduce audience capacities, ‘making invitations once again an exclusive pass for true fashion insiders,’ according to IMG. Lincoln Center has often been swarmed with fashion bloggers, street-style photographers and fashion fans looking to be seen and photographed at the big scene, in addition to the hundreds of journalists and scores of celebrities.”

12 Cute Winter Hats You Need Right Now

Oh my goodness, it is cooold out side, y’all! OK, maybe not in L.A., but in other cities (looking at you, Atlanta). But decent weather here doesn’t mean I don’t love cold-weather clothes! If only I could buy a matching hat for my dog (because I would do that…that’s me, I’m that girl)…

Training Week #15: 18 Miles

Yet again, this was a tough run. It was made especially hard since I’m coming off a 4-week (flippin’…FOUR WEEKS) cold that turned into bronchitis…the last month has been exhausting from that alone. Whatever, I’m just glad to wake up and not cough up a lung. So, following my doctor’s orders to not move from my bed, I took a two week break before our early morning 18-mile run. I was a little nervous that my legs would stop working, and they almost did, but I finished. And I kept running a quote from famed runner Dean Karnazes through my head:

“Run when you can, walk if you have to, crawl if you must; just never give up.”

Excellent advice from an inspiring athlete.

Fashion Journalism at Its Worst (and Most Useless)

hp

So Hayden Panettiere bought her dress for the Golden Globes instead of borrowing from a designer. That sounds pretty innocent, right?

Well, wrong.

Not long after Panettiere walked the red carpet, fashion journalism Jim Shi tweeted: “#GoldenGlobes: Tom Ford confirms to me he ONLY dressed #NaomiWatts tonight. Hayden Panettiere BOUGHT her Tom Ford dress at RETAIL. Tsk tsk.”

Well, the “problem” is that Mr. Ford only dresses one celeb per awards show, and on Sunday that was Naomi Watts.

But didn’t she look gorgeous? Who the F cares if wore the same designer? Didn’t it used to be wearing the same dress as someone else to an event was the faux pas—now it’s the same designer? Ugh, too much.

This, I just think, is a fashion journalist going too far. No, he didn’t say anything that was outright offensive (such as calling her fat or ugly). But…was he being respectful? No. Just the opposite. Not to mention, rude. What he did wasn’t fashion journalism and it certainly wasn’t a thoughtful critique. It was judgemental, at best.

But no worries, Tom was all class about it, sending her a bouquet of roses and a note.ford16f-1-web
