Found these gifs on What Do I Wear and I’m kind of obsessed with all of them: the best looks from Spring 2014 Couture Week in Paris.

Training Week #15: 18 Miles
Yet again, this was a tough run. It was made especially hard since I’m coming off a 4-week (flippin’…FOUR WEEKS) cold that turned into bronchitis…the last month has been exhausting from that alone. Whatever, I’m just glad to wake up and not cough up a lung. So, following my doctor’s orders to not move from my bed, I took a two week break before our early morning 18-mile run. I was a little nervous that my legs would stop working, and they almost did, but I finished. And I kept running a quote from famed runner Dean Karnazes through my head:
“Run when you can, walk if you have to, crawl if you must; just never give up.”
Excellent advice from an inspiring athlete.
Fashion Journalism at Its Worst (and Most Useless)
So Hayden Panettiere bought her dress for the Golden Globes instead of borrowing from a designer. That sounds pretty innocent, right?
Well, wrong.
Not long after Panettiere walked the red carpet, fashion journalism Jim Shi tweeted: “#GoldenGlobes: Tom Ford confirms to me he ONLY dressed #NaomiWatts tonight. Hayden Panettiere BOUGHT her Tom Ford dress at RETAIL. Tsk tsk.”
Well, the “problem” is that Mr. Ford only dresses one celeb per awards show, and on Sunday that was Naomi Watts.
But didn’t she look gorgeous? Who the F cares if wore the same designer? Didn’t it used to be wearing the same dress as someone else to an event was the faux pas—now it’s the same designer? Ugh, too much.
This, I just think, is a fashion journalist going too far. No, he didn’t say anything that was outright offensive (such as calling her fat or ugly). But…was he being respectful? No. Just the opposite. Not to mention, rude. What he did wasn’t fashion journalism and it certainly wasn’t a thoughtful critique. It was judgemental, at best.
But no worries, Tom was all class about it, sending her a bouquet of roses and a note.
Cover Controversy: Why We Love to Hate Everything
Holy shit, you guys. First of all, calm the F down. Second of all, calm the F down.
So, there’s been all this backlash at Elle for their February 2014 cover(s), which featured Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, Zooey Deschanel and Allison Williams. The problem? Well, there is no problem, so people just made one up.
People have been freaking out because, while Amy, Zooey and Allison were pictured from head to toe (or at least knees), Elle only showed Mindy from the boobs up. So of course, everyone had to get mad that her full body wasn’t being shown like everyone else. For example, Julia Sonenshein at thegloss.com wrote:
“Here she is on a cover with three women who do fit into the ‘model-skinny’ category, and Elle cropped her body out almost completely. While Poehler, Williams, and Deschanel all displayed about 75% of their whole bodies, Kaling didn’t even get a whole torso…I don’t entirely understand the intention behind releasing four covers that act as a set, but painting one subject specifically as the odd-man-out.”
Here’s the intention: There isn’t one. Elle simply saw this as a beautiful shot and decided to use it on the cover.
But OK, OK, you’re still pissed. Let’s talk about why you are being incredibly offensive.
First, let’s switch these roles around a bit. Let’s say that it was Allison Williams who was only shown from the chest up. Would there be a controversy? No, because who is going to say, “Why didn’t you show the skinny girl’s entire body? Is she too skinny for you?”
To be clear, what you’re basically saying is, “Why didn’t you show the fat girl like you do everyone else?”
Oh, you don’t see why that’s rude? Besides the fact that you’re singling someone out and calling them fat? Well, she’s not fat. She’s gorgeous. So gorgeous, in fact, that Elle decided they needed to zoom in on that beauty so we can get the full, knock-out effect.
And before you get all up in my face with comments, you should know that Mindy agrees:
Speaking on Letterman last week, she said, “The implication was, ‘What, Elle, you can’t put her big, fat body on the magazine? Why? Cause she’s just fat and gruesome? Why can’t we look at her beautiful fat body?'”
Seriously.
4 Hot Babes You’ll Say “Yeah, Right” to When They Tell You They’re Plus-Size Models
Real talk, guys: I had trouble not bursting into laughter when I wrote “Plus-Size” into this headline. These girls are gorgeous models, and they happen to not be a size 00. Technically, they’re plus-size models—but after looking at these ladies, what does that even mean ? From what I gather, it means anyone who doesn’t fit into designer sample sizes, and I’m going to guess that pretty much all of us. (Also, side note: A former Cosmopolitan editor recently wrote an exposé on how, in more recent years, women’s magazines have put more effort into photoshopping models to look bigger (“fuller” might be a better word). It’s worth a read.)
Leah burst onto the scene recently modeling Robin Lawley’s (see below) swimsuit line, and people went nuts—over an instagram of the shoot. The swimwear wasn’t even out yet! You can see why she is such a hit.
3. Toccara Jones
Though she finished in seventh place on season three of America’s Next Top Model, Ms. Jones has gone on to a fabulous modeling career and even has her own workout DVD, Toccara’s Fabulous Workout.
2. Robyn Lawley
So. Much. Gorgeous. Robyn has worked with massively talented photographers including Lee Broomfield and Steven Meisel and is the first plus-size (sorry, “plus-size,” because, be serious. She’s skinny if she’s anything.) model to appear in a campaign for Ralph Lauren.
1. Crystal Renn
My all time favorite model, Crystal Renn, is pretty much perfection from every angle. She caught flak a few years ago for losing weight, but her rep assured us she was just exercising and hiking more, and not starving herself.
Training Week #13: 16 Miles
Whew! Sixteen miles. So that’s done. This was the training run that really made everything click—that this marathon is happening and running it is really hard. Twelve miles was hard. Fourteen miles was hard. But this week, 16 miles was painful. Especially once we hit the last three miles, when I felt like I was crawling through an ocean of molasses just trying to get back to the parking lot. Weirdly, this has made me even more excited for our 18 mile run coming up in two weeks.
The best thing we did was switch up the scenery and run at the beach. We started just south of the Santa Monica Pier and ran four miles north, just a little past Temescal Canyon Road. It was a beautiful day at the beach. We are so lucky to live here!
A Happy Start to the New Year: Vegan Whole Wheat Waffles
Happy 2014, everyone! Instead of black-eyed peas, we started the new year with whole wheat waffles, a recipe from “Vegan Cooking for Carnivores” by Roberto Martin. Don’t worry, you don’t even have to ask—they are sooo freaking good. Highly recommend. I also recommend buying the cookbook if you’re curious about a vegan diet—Roberto is excellent at making a plant-based diet palatable to those who prefer the meatier side of food.
Ingredients
- 1 cup organic whole wheat flour
- 1 cup organic, unbleached, all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon, plus 1 teaspoon, baking powder
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 cups nondairy milk (almond, soy or rice. I used Trader Joe’s Organic Unsweetened Soy Milk.)
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 cup organic applesauce
- 5.5 tablespoons vegan butter, melted (I used Earth Balance Natural Buttery Spread, Original.)
- Nonstick cooking spray
- Maple syrup
Step 1: In a medium bowl, combine the flours, baking powder, cinnamon and salt.
Step 2: Stir in the milk, water, applesauce and melted butter until well incorporated.
Step 3: Let the batter rest for about 5 minutes while you preheat the waffle iron.
Step 4: Spray the preheated waffle iron with nonstick spray and cook the waffles according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Serve with maple syrup.
*Makes 8 medium waffles.
New Year, New Wardrobe
Give yourselves a pat on the back guys, because, congrats—we made it through the holidays and to the new year with our sanity firmly in tact (eh, sure).
I love to start the new year fresh. After setting a bunch of goals for 2014, my favorite way to stay motivated is to clean out the old clothes I don’t wear anymore and re-build with a wardrobe that inspires a new routine. If you’re rebooting your wardrobe too, you’ll need these staples (buying info here):
1. Accessories
Stand out with a chunky necklace—this year, the chunkier (and wilder), the better.
2. A Jacket, a Sweater, a Blouse
Each of these make for a versatile wardrobe, especially when you rotate them with…
3. Jeans, Jeans and Jeans
Worry about pants later—right now, you need to get comfy in denim: black jeans, boyfriend jeans and dress-up jeans (for a night on the town that doesn’t require a dress).
4. Boots!
While it’s still cold out, enjoy the best part of cold weather and strap on a pair of heeled boots. Or, to stay a bit more comfy, try quilted riding boots.
5. Last But Not Least: The Bag
Do I really need to give you a reason to buy a new purse?
